Seven additional talking points for managers:

The major problem with being a manager in a prior life; is that we tend to forget that when we are in the position of being a candidate, we are really a product. Indeed, in today’s market, it is even more incumbent on us to focus on your role as the sales person of record. Below are additional points to remember and discuss during your interview sessions.

1. Ability to work independently, and as a team member. 

2. Imbued with an entrepreneurial spirit

3. Ability to recruit, evaluate, motivate and manage your support staff, sales, operations, manufacture, marketing, etc.

4. Ability to develop vision, then convey that vision to their troops and finally to lead with that vision of excellence

5. Ability to distinguish between facts and fantasy.

6. Ability to focus on the task at hand, sales activity, organizational efforts or operations

7. Ability to be a true partner to your new “superior” with full or partial P&L or management responsibilities

Then close for the opportunity.  You are expected to close often enough to get the order.

Do not give away more than you must to secure a positive decision. Remember do not share your client base or reference list until after the position is secured. If then. If those items are requested during the interview, then this is not the place for you. We just had a candidate that did just that to secure an interview on his own; the potential employer then established a contact with the new lead and told the candidate to “get lost.”


You are selling your strengths, skills, attributes, track record, experiences and potential, not your rolodex.  This hiring situation does not need to be adversarial, but you must be vigilant to keep it focused on you as an opportunity.
